Studies show that prolonged encounter on problematic situations can lead to weight gain and obesity in the later years of your life. Which is why we do see connection between stress and weight gain.
Your body produces a hormone known as cortisol every day. However, if you are frequently stressed out in your life, you may experience some health problems in the future. This hormone generates a signal in every stressful situation, while it leads to similar responses.
In other cases, the cortisol results in changes in the metabolic processes in the body, such as the following:
- It reduces of amino acid uptake of the muscles
Upon breaking down of the protein component, the decrease of amino acid usage of the muscles can also lead to severe muscle wasting. It can also make the metabolic rate slower than ever. Thus, it lowers the tendency to burn calories in the long run and increases the chances of storing more fat in some parts of the body.
- It increases the tendency to accumulate visceral (belly) fat
As the cortisol can induce insulin resistance, it can also cause the accumulation of fat in your body. The improper regulation of insulin can lead to an excessive conversion of sugars in the blood into fat, which is the primary storage in the visceral area. In the long run, the fat stays in the emotional part of the body. This accumulation is the start for the weight gain and the increase of the waistline. This process is the risk factor for several chronic diseases upon prolonged changes in the function of cortisol.
So, what are we going to do now?
In the meantime, we must spend our time to find ways of reducing our stress levels. If you can place it in your schedule, watch your favorite shows or listen to good music. While there is a direct correlation between stress and weight gain in the stomach, we must show that we can live our life without compromising our health and happiness.
